A real-life Romeo and Juliet who caught each other’s eye from nearby balconies during Italy’s coronavirus lockdown finally met, exchanged their first kiss — and are now planning to move in together, a report said.
Michele D’Alpaos, 38, an IT expert, and Paola Agnelli, 39, a lawyer, knew they wanted to connect when they first spotted each other during a community balcony concert in Verona — the same city where the Shakespeare play is set — in mid-March, The Daily Mail reported.
D’Alpaos found out who Agnelli was through his sister Sylvia, who goes to the same gym, according to the report.
So he reached out to her on Instagram, and their relationship blossomed from there.
Nearly two months later, they met in a local park Monday — as Italy eased its lockdown — where they embraced and removed their masks for a kiss, The Times of London reported.
“We were both nervous but it went really well,” Agnelli told the Times. “He was just like I imagined he would be.”
“It was wonderful to finally meet her, she is more beautiful than I thought,” added D’Alpaos, who hung a large banner from his roof with “Paola” written on it.
The Italian government introduced a vague set of rules allowing those with a “stable bond of affection” to meet beginning Monday.
“We discussed it because we didn’t want to end up being punished, rather like Shakespeare’s characters,” Agnelli told the outlet. “But we decided we fit the bill, and got closer than a meter at our meeting.”
D’Alpaos currently lives with his parents, but bought his own apartment which he has yet to move into, he said.
“I have been showing Paola photos of it and we are making plans to move in,” he told the paper.
