Lankard: For the love of a mother - Oklahoman.com

Becoming a mother means assuming an enormous amount of guilt. Am I doing what is right? Am I doing enough? Am I doing too much? Should I have only worked part time? What did I do wrong?

Two things are certain. A mother’s opinion matters, and she has enormous power.

While we often read about moms who neglect their children, it is always good to meet one who approaches her parenting intentionally and intelligently.

A mother I have never forgotten I met in 2006. Her name was Twyla Gray, and she was an Oklahoma County district judge.

After Gray’s death to cancer, I met her daughter, who at the time was a 20-year-old college student. She told me of a tradition her mother started with her when she was very young.

Each day of the 12 days before Christmas, she would receive a small gift and a handwritten note from her mom.

The daughter had kept all those notes from their last Christmas together and gave me permission to share a few with others.

I love your tenacity. Things have been hard, but you have stuck with it. I admire your hard work and determination.
