I rekindled the flame with my first love during lockdown - Chron

So far, 2020 has been quite the year, and plenty of things have happened that I didn’t anticipate. Among those unexpected happenings was a bright spot: reconnecting with my high school sweetheart.

Crazy, right? But let’s not get it twisted — this wasn’t one of those situations where an ex resurfaced because of the mass hysteria that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused.

I’m not one to believe in fairytale endings. So who would’ve thought that of all things, I’d be dating (again) the guy from my first real relationship?

How did we get here?

Let’s backtrack to our relationship in high school. Back in the days of off-campus lunches at Westside High School, I was out with friends and decided to get a taco for this guy that I thought was super cute. Upon arriving back at campus, I handed him a bag full of food, and that was our official introduction.

I’m still grateful for that taco.

Fast-forward to a few months later and we ended up dating. We were a cute teenage couple. We found fun in hip-hop banter, streetwear brands and my corny-but-hilarious jokes.

What I first loved about him was his creativity, wit and clever responses to whatever I had to say. His mind seemed (and still seems) to fire on all cylinders. Above all else, we created a space where we could undeniably be ourselves. Though we were so young at the time, we fell in love. We ended up dating for two years in high school. He was my prom date.

Then came our high school graduation. We mutually decided to break up because we were attending college in different states. We stayed friends, which set the foundation for a long-lasting connection. While finding our footing in college, we would text each other every so often to check in and see how the other was doing, but nothing much more than that.

We were completely different people when we saw each other next.

We didn't have your typical Hallmark Channel reconnection in a coffee shop. In June, I wanted to see my friend, so I ended up going to his house for dinner.

Somehow, after all that time, we didn’t seem to miss a beat — we picked up right where we left off. We both believe that while we did date other people throughout our time as friends, we couldn’t seem to find what we were looking for, which turned out to be each other.

We spent about two weeks catching up before we decided to dive head-first into a relationship. Now to some, this may seem a bit abrupt, but in reality, it wasn’t. This was our Hallmark moment: everything felt right, so we went for it.

It was one of the best decisions we both made.

The beauty of our relationship is in the fact that we're such good friends, and that nothing ever seems too difficult. If there is a lesson to leave you with, it’s that real love never dies. You may find yourself ignoring or avoiding it, but it never truly goes away.

Even after all this time, he remains my favorite hip-hop song, the laugh that makes my ribs hurt and, above all else, my best friend.
