I see letters — often penned by those associated with some dimension of the “homeless issue”– claiming we are a wonderful community and “love” is the answer.
We are not a particularly wonderful community: Even during the last two years, our “liberal” council continued with thousands of arrests on “quality of life” violations — often essentially unavoidable infractions. None of our criminalization laws were modified, not even our highly symbolic, stick-it-to-the-homeless “sit-lie” statute. We hired a permanent homeless hit squad, aka, “street crimes unit.” And, we pushed forward the closure of our soup kitchen — the primary, last resort source of free food and clothing.
On the positive side, after years of prodding, we installed six portable toilets, making 24 hour toilet access available. (Controversial in our loving community!) And, in March, we lifted some of the heavy handed rousting, allowing those without housing to pitch a tent without being constantly “moved along” or arrested; this only because the CDC advised “shelter in place” to limit the spread of COVID-19. Even then, “camping” was resented by our loving citizens, outraged at seeing tents in “their” parks.
As to the trumpeting of love as a letter subject: Love as a sentiment has crowd appeal, as do claims of our wonderfulness. Unfortunately, love, for the term to have any depth of meaning, has to be informed by uncomfortable attention to suffering and then actualized in sacrifice. Also unfortunate, our wonderfulness should be measured in terms of justice — a starkly unforgiving metric.
