Celebrate Juneteenth with Grace Love and Nadine's Kitchen - Port Townsend Leader

Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and marks the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to ensure that all enslaved people be freed, a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

Grace Love will perform and the community will gather in celebration of Juneteenth in Jefferson County on Saturday, June 19.

This year’s theme is unity, Love said.

“It will be a celebration of Blackness and unity within the Jefferson County area, specifically for Port Townsend Black folks.”

She described the event as a “good ol’ family barbecue,” a community building event to open the conversation of unity.

“Just come with intention of being in a space that is for unity and celebration.”

“Our allies are welcome, but they need to come in with respect and intention,” she added. Participants should come with the intent to honor the sacred space being created in the name of healing, growth, and perseverance.

The celebration will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 19, at Woodbridge Farm, 408 Center Road in Chimacum.

COVID protocols will be followed. The event is for ages 21 and up.

Tickets are on sale at nadinessoulkitchen.com.

The event is free to members of the Black community.
