Love is in the air - Red Bluff Daily News

There’s a lot of bitterness in the world today. So, now’s a good time to think of something pleasant – like love. Being in love is something everyone dreams of. There’s nothing like it.

People will ask someone “what’s different?” about them. And then guess, “Oh, you’ve found someone.” You can just tell sometimes. It’s that obvious. For most of us, it takes two people to feel complete. It can get pretty lonely all alone inside your own head. And what can bring a smile to your face quicker than seeing the one you love is just as happy to see you, after being apart.

Love is a visceral thing. It’s all biochemistry, with a touch of magic thrown in. It really can’t be explained, but you know it happens. It’s not lust, although the two are often confused. Lust without love is shallow. But lust is a part of love, especially at the outset of any sincere relationship. Those of us who have been around a while, understand that true love will outlast that stage, and grow ever stronger.

But being in love doesn’t mean you’ll never be angry with one another. One of the greatest loves was that of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. They fell in love during the filming of Cleopatra. (Albeit both were married to other folks at the time.) It was a world-famous love affair whose meteoric ups and downs were both wonderful and terrible. People drank a lot more back then, especially the rich and famous – which always makes things even more difficult, in addition to their incredible egos. But there was no doubt that they loved one another totally and completely.

I saw a cartoon on Facebook this morning that I had seen before. It shows an older couple, both obviously very angry with one another, each sitting at the opposite ends of a bench in the rain. But the man had an umbrella – which he held in his outstretched arm to protect his beloved – while both were scowling. The caption was, “Love is caring for each other even when you’re angry.”

That little cartoon pretty much said it all. True love never diminishes, no matter how badly you might want to throttle your spouse at times. But you don’t. That’s how relationships last. There must be a constant spark. Unfortunately, love alone is sometimes insufficient, when there are serious issues of substance or domestic abuse. And those folks must often go their own way.

But when things work, love is also a great source of strength. Author Dean Koontz, says “Marriage is…a promise that with me in your corner, you will never stand alone.” And that’s what it’s all about. Loyalty. Doing all one can to see your spouse succeed, and reveling in his or her success. Like seeing a beautiful flower grow and bloom. And protecting one another with your lives, if necessary.

And that beautiful flower never withers in your eyes. The face you love never diminishes in beauty, because of that love. My wife still calls me “handsome.” I don’t know what she sees, but I’m not complaining. But I do know that she gets prettier every day. Nothing makes my heart sing like seeing her smile when she is glad to see me.

I don’t think I need to tell you that I’m a hopeless romantic. I bought my wife the movie House of Flying Daggers for one Valentine’s Day. It’s a wonderful, but tragic love story placed within the beautiful scenery of China. I recommend it. Oh, and by the way, today is our wedding anniversary. Happy twentieth-minus-one anniversary darling.
